Scrap with an M
October 10, 2009

Going to the library to get the books I order is always a little like Christmas morning. There's such an excitement on the way there. This bundle of books had some work items, a book on poetry I'd been waiting almost six months for- you wouldn't think there'd be a waitlist for poetry, would you -  and some Halloween decorating idea books.

After getting my books, I got sidetracked by dinner, and helping Solomon with his homework and finally when everyone was asleep and the house was quiet but for the chugging sound of the dishwasher, I sat on the couch and cracked open the poetry book. It fell open to a small pink scrap of paper marking these words:

...Sometimes our best efforts do not go
amiss; sometimes we do as we meant to.
The sun will sometimes melt a field of sorrow
that seemed hard frozen; may it happen for you.

(Excerpted from the poem Sometimes by Sheenagh Pugh.)

I've been having a rough couple of days.  Something about the impending winter, the colder weather, the economy, I could go on...

I looked closer at the pink paper, a torn scrap from a magazine. On the bottom edge was the small lower-case white m. A tiny letter heaven-sent that smiled right at me.

I love that "Sometimes" poem. When I taught high school, I used to make a "winter" bulletin board with icy pics and that quote in the middle. Isn't it lovely how God plops his mercy drops into our lives in the most unexpected places?

Dear Sabra,

I am sorry you have been feeling a little low - I understand and I'm sure almost everyone can relate. But you are also seeing the little nuggets of God's encouragement and love that come our way - the book at the right time, the perfect poem, the mysterious scrap of paper. So seize those little moments and find joy in sitting with your sons, making/getting those cute costumes (we expect to see photos!), admiring the palette of autumn leaves and mums. You have the most wonderful heart - brimming with love for your family and the Lord. And realize how your blogs and selflessly sharing your life uplifts OurPrayer readers across the globe. God entrusted YOU! That is awesome! I'm sure glad!

Blessings that the sun will shine on you today -

Today is October 10, my birthday. By the end of this month, I will be retired from the Library that I have worked at for 20 years. Retiring was a sudden decision, resulting from health issues, and state budget cuts for the libraries. I have felt somewhat depressed, and unsure of my move. Your blogs that I read have made a big difference! One, your description of your visit to the library reminds me of the happiness and help that I was priviledged to have given to others, and the blessings I received back. Your thoughts on beginnings and endings touched my heart. In fact, all your experiences touched home with me, and blessed me. I am finding it hard to expess myself right now, but I want you to know that you blessed me, and I thank you. I am an aspiring writer, although I am not expressing myself well right now. May God bless you.
