Falling in Love with Potential
June 15, 2008

It may not look like much, but this little old outhouse will some day be my writing studio. The 'outhouse writer studio' project is the last of a long line of renovations to our property. And I've been really championing this idea with my husband - who is the muscle and brains behind the renovation. I can paint, but leveling frames, making structures sound, applying shingles these things are beyond me.

Years ago, when we bought our house (which honestly, wasn't in much better condition than the outhouse) so many people walked the rooms inspecting its problems and said, "You'd be better off tearing it down and building new." At the time nothing upset my husband more. And I loved that he had fallen for the old farmhouse's potential, for the possibilities of bringing something beautiful back to its glory.

Now, when I look at our last little outhouse project, I like to think about weeks from now (hopefully) when the job is done and I'm in my own little sanctuary. A magical place of my own, not inside, but not outside, a place, most likely, where in the past lots of decisions have been made and problems solved.

I'm hoping the next great novel will be completed there. But honestly, the destination has never really been what's it all about. For me, being able to sit in a place my husband has lovingly restored with my work in mind, well that is blessing enough.
