Little Presents
September 22, 2009

Tim had only been away at college for two weeks and I was already missing him.  Don’t get me wrong.  I was happy he was at school, glad to hear about the classes he was taking, glad to know that he was studying hard and having fun with his friends.  But I’d gotten used to having him around this summer – home on weekends from his job as a camp counselor.  And we’d especially had a good time at the beach when we were both on vacation.  How could I tell him I was thinking of him?

Then I remembered how he would always ask me when we were home or at the beach or standing in line to see a movie or shopping at Target, “Dad, can I borrow your Chapstick?”  I’d dig into my pocket and hand it over.  And he’d return it.  Father/son sharing.

At that thought I dashed out the door to the drugstore on the corner.  I bought two Chapsticks, scribbled a quick note and sent it off to his school.  At least he’d be surprised there was some mail for him.

A couple of days later I got an email back: “I just wanted to say thank you for the Chapstick, Dad.  It was really very sweet.  That little package brought a lot of joy to my day.  Love, Tim.”

Guess what brought joy to my day?

Always, always, always it's the little things that matter, that bind us together.

Like Mary Lou said, its the little things . . .  I'm sure that one day, when your son has child of his own, sharing the Chapstick will be a special moment between the two of them, just as it is for the two of you.  peggy - aka - sligo702.

Dear Rick,

I am always moved by the love your family shares. It is a rare thing for men to express their love and a joy when sons have no qualms about telling their parents they love them.

Once - at my son's request -  I made a birthday cake with white frosting and sprinkles (see a posting I made on Mary Lou's blog about cakes) My cakes are pretty sad-sack (think Charlie Brown Christmas tree) but no one has been poisoned yet. I felt like I'd just won a jackpot when my son said, "Mom, that was the best cake I ever had," and then the next year, "Can you make a cake like that again?" I still send to my two big kids, who live in Maine and Illinois, an Easter basket, Halloween treats and Valentine's hearts. And I think they feel the love in each gift...

Yes, it's the little things that show love... Blessings to you and your family...

Rick,

It takes a special son to write a quick note as your son did to you.  You raised him right.  Being thankful is a blessing, and having a wonderful son like yours is even a more blessing.  I am glad to know that there are children that are sincere and nice in the world because the world needs love, kindness, and a thankful heart.
